Yule & December 2025

Magickal Attributes of the Cold Moon
The December Full Moon marks the final lunar peak of the year, bringing the energy of culmination, deep introspection, and closure. It acts as a natural energetic reset button before the Winter Solstice (Yule) and the (Mundane) start of the new calendar year.

Primary Focus Areas
Release and Closure: This is an extremely powerful time for letting go of what no longer serves you from the past year—old habits, emotional baggage, draining relationships, and limiting beliefs. It’s the final sweep to clear the slate.

Introspection and Clarity:
The long, dark nights encourage turning inward. The moon’s illumination is said to bring clarity and emotional honesty, helping you see your life, your progress, and your true desires clearly.

Renewal and Intention-Setting:
As the year ends, the Cold Moon is an excellent time for setting clear, focused intentions for the coming year. This is about spiritual alchemy—shedding a part of yourself to be “reborn” anew in the light of the returning sun (Winter Solstice).

Inner Strength and Resilience: The deep winter season symbolizes conserving energy and drawing on your inner reserves, fostering mental and emotional resilience.

Traditional Magickal Actions
Release Rituals:
Write down all you wish to release on a piece of paper, and safely burn it (in a fireproof container) as a symbol of letting go, watching the smoke carry the burdens away.

Manifestation:
Write your goals for the new year in the present tense (“I am…”) and place your intentions under the moonlight to amplify their energy.

Cleansing:
Use this energy for uncrossing work (releasing confusion or psychic fog) and clearing mental blockages.

Spreading Blessings:
Owing to its proximity to Yule and the holidays, it is a traditional time for sharing your blessings and opening your heart to those less fortunate.

Correspondences
Colors:
White, Silver, Icy Blue (for clarity and winter stillness), Red, Black (for the darkness of the season and the return of light).

Trees & Herbs:
Pine, Fir, Holly, Mistletoe, Ivy, Cinnamon (connected to the Winter Solstice).

Gemstones:
Obsidian (for deep grounding and clearing), Ruby, Serpentine, Moonstone (for abundance and intuition).

Element:
Often associated with Fire because of the return of the light at Yule, even though it is the coldest time of year.

General Moon Lore for December
The lore surrounding the December Full Moon is heavily tied to the harsh realities of the season in the Northern Hemisphere, marking a time of deep winter. Survival and starvation (during this time) were common challenges of our ancestors. These were often themes of their Magick and the focus of their concerns. Remember your great fortune in comparison and in light of our new ease of living…comparatively.

Traditional Names
Cold Moon:
The most common name, coming from the Native American and European traditions, reflecting the plummeting temperatures of the season…and perhaps the emanation of the moons energy during that time. As the cold has lessons for us all.

Long Night Moon:
Named because this Full Moon often occurs near the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, providing extended darkness and long hours for the moon to shine.

Moon Before Yule:
A name reflecting its timing just before the Winter Solstice, a major turning point in the Wheel of the Year.

Oak Moon:
Another traditional name used in some Celtic and Druidic cultures.

Spiritual and Seasonal Meaning
Stillness and Rest:

The Cold Moon mirrors the natural world, which is stripped back, quiet, and resting under the frozen ground. It is an invitation to consider the deep and meaningful things in your life as well as deep introspection and commitment to beneficial change. As “The Starving Times” clearly show what has actual value in our lives… And what is superficial.

Hail Satan!
Happy Yule and Solstice!
